How to Crochet Easy Leg Warmers: A Beginner-Friendly DIY

Hello and welcome back! If you know me, you know I love a good “stash-buster” project. Today, I’m taking you through how I made these super cozy, very easy leg warmers using some leftover yarn from a previous project and an 8 mm crochet hook.
Whether you’re looking to level up your winter outfits or just want a quick weekend project, these are perfect. The best part? We’re using a simple Half Double Crochet (HDC) stitch, so even if you’re a beginner, you’ve got this!
Tools & Materials

Step 1: Find Your Length
We’re going to start by creating a basic slip knot. From there, start creating your first chain.
How do you know how long to make it? I like to keep things simple: just take your “chained yarn” and hold it up against your leg. Once it reaches the length you want for your leg warmers, you’re ready to start the first row!
Step 2: The Foundation Row
To start the first row:

Yarn over and insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.

Yarn over and draw up the yarn.

Yarn over again and pull through all three loops on your hook.

Repeat this simple half double crochet all the way to the end of the row.

Step 3: Creating the Ribbed Texture
For the next row, we want that beautiful ribbed look.
- Chain one (to turn), flip your work, and yarn over.
- The Secret: Make sure you are going into the back loop only of the chain, not through both loops like you usually would.
Going through the back loop is what gives the leg warmers that stretchy, knit-like texture. Continue this until you reach the end, and just keep repeating this row!
Step 4: Check the Fit
Basically, this is it! You’re going to repeat that back-loop HDC until the piece is wide enough to wrap around your leg. Make sure to try it on as you go—you want it to fit nicely and snugly.

Step 5: Joining the Ends
Once you’re happy with the width, it’s time to turn that rectangle into a tube:

Fold your work so the ends meet.

Yarn over and slip stitch through both the front and back loops of the joining edges.

Pull the yarn through all three loops and repeat this step all the way down to the end. All that’s left is to fiddle with those loose ends, weave them in with your needle, and you’re done.

And Voila!
A perfect pair of legwarmers
I am so happy with how this turned out. It keeps my legs warm and I absolutely love pairing them with my gym leggings.
